Data Sources & Attributions
Last updated May 2026  |  Regression Candidate (operated by Enterprise 479 LLC)

Regression Candidate's analytics, projections, and rankings incorporate publicly available NFL data assembled by the nflverse open-data project and its contributors. We are grateful for their work and committed to honoring the open-license terms under which that data is shared. This page constitutes the required attribution notice for those materials.

1. nflverse / nflreadr

The nflverse project is a collection of open-source R and Python packages that aggregate and distribute NFL play-by-play, roster, player statistics, and related data. The data is maintained by a community of contributors and is made freely available under Creative Commons licenses.

Dataset / Package License Source / Repository
nflverse data (general) — play-by-play, rosters, player stats, schedules, participation, etc. Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0) CC BY 4.0 github.com/nflverse
FTN charting data (Next Gen Stats–style route/coverage charting sourced via Football Outsiders / FTN Data, distributed through nflverse) Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International (CC BY-SA 4.0) CC BY-SA 4.0 github.com/nflverse/nflverse-data
nfl_data_py & nflreadr (Python / R package code) MIT License MIT github.com/nflverse/nfl_data_py
github.com/nflverse/nflreadr
Primary Contributors & Maintainers

The nflverse project is maintained by Sebastian Carl, Ben Baldwin, and a broader community of open-source contributors. Full contributor lists are available in the respective GitHub repositories linked above.

2. License Compliance Notes
CC BY 4.0 (general nflverse data)

Under the CC BY 4.0 license, we are permitted to use, reproduce, and adapt the data for commercial purposes provided that we:

  • give appropriate credit to the nflverse contributors (satisfied by this page and in-product notices);
  • provide a link to the license; and
  • indicate if changes were made.

The analyses, models, rankings, and projections produced by Regression Candidate represent original creative and analytical work derived from underlying factual data. Raw statistical facts are not protectable by copyright (Feist Publications v. Rural Telephone Service, 499 U.S. 340 (1991)); our proprietary content consists of the original selection, weighting, and presentation of insights built on top of those facts.

CC BY-SA 4.0 (FTN charting data)

The FTN charting data distributed through nflverse carries a CC BY-SA 4.0 (ShareAlike) license. The ShareAlike condition applies to Adapted Material — that is, material that constitutes a copyrightable adaptation of the original dataset. Where Regression Candidate uses FTN data as an input to original statistical models that produce new, separable outputs (projections, efficiency scores, rankings), those outputs are not “Adapted Material” within the meaning of CC BY-SA 4.0 and are not required to be shared under the same license.

However, any direct reproduction or minimally transformed redistribution of the FTN charting data itself would require a CC BY-SA 4.0 license. Regression Candidate does not currently redistribute the raw FTN charting dataset to end users.

MIT License (package code)

The nfl_data_py and nflreadr package code (not the data) is licensed under the MIT License, which imposes no restrictions on commercial use beyond preserving the copyright notice in derivative source code distributions. Regression Candidate uses these packages as software libraries and is in full compliance.

Notice of Modification: Where Regression Candidate has processed, transformed, or modeled raw data from the sources listed above, those transformations are indicated in the relevant product features. The underlying raw data remains the intellectual property of its respective licensors under the terms stated on this page.
